EN LO COTIDIANO
THE STATEMENT – I created “En Lo Cotidiano” as a way of visualizing the space where Abuelita theology was born, specifically in the intimacy of the presence of those closest to us. I utilized a blend of skin colors to present the possibility for viewers to see themselves in the hands displayed, especially those from underrepresented ethnic and racial backgrounds.
The inclusion of the multi toned hands also serves as a reminder that Hispanic and Latinx ethnicities, as well as our experiences, are not a monolith. I included food as well as art on the back wall because many communities connect through creative expression. “En Lo Cotidiano” is a visual beckoning to reflect on and actively participate in your community’s traditions and storytelling traditions, because storytelling is how we grow as people.
